Southeast Portal for Electric Transportation Opportunities

This portal serves as a central hub that aggregates and enhances the visibility of active funding sources, comment solicitations, research opportunities, events, and other participatory initiatives geared towards advancing transportation electrification – primarily across Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Tennessee, South Carolina, Virginia, and West Virginia.

This list is managed by Duke University’s Nicholas Institute for Energy, Environment & Sustainability as part of the Southeast Electric Transportation Regional Initiative (SETRI).

The US Department of Energy has issued a funding opportunity announcement (FOA) to support research, development, and demonstration of 1) second-life applications for electric drive vehicle batteries that have been used to power electric drive vehicles; and 2) technologies and processes for final recycling and disposal of electric drive vehicle batteries. Concept papers are due February 7, 2024 and full applications are due April 19, 2024. FOA number: DE-FOA-0003120.

The NC Division of Air Quality (DAQ) is accepting applications for the 2023 Mobile Sources Emissions Reduction Program to fund the replacement of older diesel vehicles with cleaner alternatives. The goal of the program is to achieve signification reductions in diesel emissions, including nitrogen oxides (NOx) and greenhouse gases. Any private or public sector entity with a physical presence in North Carolina is eligible to apply. All original equipment or vehicles must be operational in the previous two years and the replacement equipment or vehicle must be operated at least 70% in North Carolina for the next 5 years. Projects to replace diesel vehicles with electric vehicles receive bonus points during the scoring process. Bonus points are also available to projects in environmental justice communities or historically under-resourced counties, as well as to projects submitted by minority-owned or women-owned businesses. Attendees will hear from multiple VCC staff about success from years past, the areas of growth expected for 2024, and learn how to get involved during a Q&A portion at the end. The 2024 update is highlighting EV related programs but VCC is an advocate for all alternative fuels.

The State of Alabama is providing funding assistance to 1) strategically deploy electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure sites to support the development of convenient, accessible, reliable, and equitable EV charging and/or 2) certain workforce development projects to ensure workforce capacity exists to properly install, operate, and maintain such charging infrastructure through National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) funding. Applicants may apply for a reimbursement grant of up to 80% of the Project Eligible Costs. See link for details in application guide.

The EPA is hosting a video challenge to showcase the benefits of electric transportation. Participants and invited to create a short video showcasing personal experience with EVs in one of three categories (personal mobility, electric vehicles, electric buses), The winning submissions will receive monetary prizes. The GA Department of Transportation is hosting a virtual public hearing for the Georgia National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) Deployment Program, Round 1. The purpose of the virtual public hearing is to provide the public with an opportunity to review and provide comments on executive summaries submitted by Proposers in response to the Request for Proposals (RFP) for the final design and construction of this project. The executive summaries represent an overview of how each Proposer plans to satisfy the financial and technical requirements of the project. Executive summaries have been published and made available online for review and public comment in the virtual meeting room below for 30 days beginning Friday, December 22, 2023. Interested parties are invited to provide feedback and comments until Saturday, January 20, 2024.
